Shiels\u2019s magical work offers a laboratory for understanding the little-known role played by surrealism in the performative turn, thanks to its connection with anthropology and esotericism, and to the introduction into twentieth-century art of the marvellous, magic, myth, and the sacred. This pivotal impulse led to the emergence of theatrical and illusionist avant-gardes seeking to reconnect with the ritual dimension of performances. The subversive English artist Tony Shiels was the main architect of the reinvention of illusionist performances in the late 1960s. By reconnecting them to \u2018occulture\u2019, he revived a dynamic of artistic creation in touch with popular magical culture. Shiels\u2019s art has a \u2018mythopoietic\u2019 (myth-making) dimension that fulfilled the surrealist agenda by being able to bring local legends to life through \u2018monsterraising\u2019. The development of this counter-culture-related magical art is an essential counterpoint for understanding the performative turn of the 1970s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RESUME<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00c0 la crois\u00e9e de l\u2019histoire de l\u2019art, des \u00e9tudes magiques, de l\u2019illusiographie et des th\u00e9ories de la performance, l\u2019analyse de la trajectoire de Tony Shiels (1938\u20132024), de son apprentissage de la peinture surr\u00e9aliste jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la fondation de la&nbsp;\u00ab magie bizarre \u00bb, permet de mettre en lumi\u00e8re la mani\u00e8re dont le merveilleux&nbsp;se d\u00e9ploie transm\u00e9diatiquement et peut s\u2019actualiser lors d\u2019une performance.&nbsp;L\u2019oeuvre magique de Shiels offre un laboratoire pour comprendre le r\u00f4le m\u00e9connu&nbsp;jou\u00e9 par le surr\u00e9alisme dans le tournant performatif, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 sa connexion avec&nbsp;l\u2019anthropologie et l\u2019\u00e9sot\u00e9risme, et \u00e0 l\u2019introduction dans l\u2019art du XXe si\u00e8cle du&nbsp;merveilleux, de la magie, du mythe et du sacr\u00e9.
